Hoar frost forms for brief periods on the window of an unheated greenhouse during mid winter, if and when Alaskan temperatures cooperate with consistent cold. The mid afternoon, low horizon sun briefly lights up the background, providing just the right amount of “golden hour” lighting. The variety of ice crystal structures and natural lighting effects, never cease to amaze. Given the vagary of natural conditions, these photographs are unique and may never be recreated.
These images attempt to capture the intricate and exquisite ice sculptures that nature creates. That this finely detailed artistic intricacy exists within a few square inches is magical. In my opinion, contemplating nature at a micro scale is as much a reflection of nature's grandeur as a normal view of the landscape.
